Millie and Bill Welcome a Chick

Millie and Bill Welcome a Chick

During the very early days of March, Bill began bringing more food for Millie until a little stockpile of rodents were visible around the nest site.

Millie rarely left the nest and was seen to be fluffing her feathers up and paying a lot of attention to the eggs she had incubated for a little over 30 days.

We had noticed from the onset that Millie did leave her first and second egg soon after they were laid and temperatures dropped considerably below freezing for several hours.

Unfortunately, this has meant that they have failed to hatch.

After the third egg was laid Millie rarely left her nest and the final egg was never allowed to go cold.

Around the 5th of March Millie's behaviour indicated that she may have a baby owl under her and this was confirmed when a white fluffy image could be seen in front of her.

Last night she briefly left the nest site to reveal her chick and a fully stocked larder including a young rat, a frog and wood mice. All the food a baby owl needs to grow and successfully fledge !

The owlet seems to be growing rapidly day by day and should become quite entertaining to watch over the coming days as it gains strength.

Hopefully this year our resident owls will successfully raise a healthy chick, which hopefully we all may hear hooting from the trees in Autumn.

Keep up to date with our owl cam here.
